Candice Lureman hasn’t let profound deafness and discrimination stop her from pursuing her dream to drive heavy vehicles. From day one of her journey to drive outback road trains, Candice has had to dig deep to overcome barriers that would see most people pack up and go home, such as thirty-seven truck driver training schools politely refusing to train Candice.
Candice met US Marine Corp Veteran and driver trainer Wayne Striplin, who saw beyond her deafness and focused instead on her passion and determination to drive heavy vehicles. He has watched on proudly as Candice met industry challenges head on, become the first deaf woman to drive super B-doubles in Australia, and the only deaf woman on the planet to pull triple road trains. In 2019, in recognition of her considerable achievements, Candice won the RFNSW Transport Woman of the Year award.
Candice’s extraordinary story, shared with the help of an Auslan Interpreter, will transport you into her life behind the wheel and the challenges she’s faced finding her feet in the sector as the competent, professional driver she’s proven herself to be.
